The humble idea for a day that encourages people to do good has resulted in
Giving Tuesday, a global charity movement approaching its eighth anniversary on
December 1. The movement has grown significantly since its creation, inspiring
millions of people to give as well as collaborate within their communities on more
sustainable charity efforts.
The movement encourages individuals to donate time, money, or their voice to something
bigger than themselves, be it helping a neighbor or organizing a larger community effort.
The movement's official website has ideas to help individuals get started including
nonprofits to work for or donate to and ideas for small acts of kindness.
For organizations, a complete toolkit is available to support larger efforts, from hosting
virtual rallies to facilitating community conversation. Social media images and press
releases are free to ensure access to consistent communication across all outreach efforts –
several of the resources are available in Spanish as well.
The Giving Tuesday movement has led to the creation of the Giving Tuesday Data
Commons, with over 150 collaborators and more than 40 global data labs, to use data to
explore giving patterns and behaviors and inspire more generosity globally. More than
$503 million was donated online in the United States for #GivingTuesdayNow on May 5,
2020.
