Influenza (flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. Symptoms
can include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches,
headaches, chills, and fatigue (tiredness). Some people may have vomiting
and diarrhea. The flu can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to
hospitalization or death. Some people, such as older people, young children, and
people with certain health conditions, are at high risk for serious flu complications. The
best way to prevent the flu is by getting vaccinated each year.
A yearly flu vaccine is recommended for everyone 6 months and older without an
increased risk for a serious adverse reaction.
