wcmo ahec Federal Funding West Central Missouri Area Health Education Centers (WCMO AHEC) receives $75,000 through October 2014 to support youth recruitment efforts, clinical training for students pursuing careers in the health professions and continuing education for health care providers. State Funding Missouri AHEC (MAHEC) receives $500,000 from July 2013 through June 2014. Of that funding, the WCMO AHEC receives $45,000. Additionally, the Missouri Legislature overturned funding withholdings that Gov. Jay Nixon enacted, which resulted in additional funding for WCMO AHEC of $19,000. Workforce Development and Staffing WCMO AHEC was instrumental in helping HCC recruit and staff its Waverly clinic. Additionally, the clinics serve as training sites for students who are pursuing careers in the health care professions. Experts also provide HIPAA training to clinic staff that leverages HC21 online modules. AHEC Career Enhancement Scholars (ACES) Program Enrollment continues to increase and includes both high school and undergraduate students. ACES offers career preparation, clinical activities, college visits and one-on-one career planning. Lex-La-Ray Technical Center Two contracts have been solidified with the Lexington-based technical center to include LPN training and a health occupations class. Truman Medical Center (TMC) Partnership Through a partnership with TMC Corporate Academy, WCMO AHEC is launching a Medical Explorer Post at Hospital Hill. The collaboration also includes Children's Mercy Hospital and the UMKC schools of dentistry and pharmacy. Additionally, AHEC provides one-on-one counseling for TMC employees who are looking to further their careers. Communication skills, job seeking techniques and marketable qualities for health care workers are among the lessons provided. Cristo Rey Health Professions Summit Through a collaboration with the MU School of Medicine, AHEC sponsored 35 students last summer who came from as far as Birmingham, Ala. The Cristo Rey program gives high school juniors and sophomores an opportunity to explore health care careers. Students learn about medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, physical therapy, ultrasonography, pharmacy, speech and communication disorders, among other specialties. Efforts are underway, on the national level, to connect other AHECs with their local Cristo Rey center to expand overall participation. HCC of Rural Missouri is the host agency for WCMO AHEC.
