5/ TheBucknerClarion.com May 22, 2014 Relay for Life Buckner takes steps for a cure One in every four deaths in the United States are cancer related, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS), with an estimated 500,000 deaths occurring in 2014. The organization expects over 1 million new cancer cases will be diagnosed this year. The Relay For Life, a nationwide event, is considered the signature event of the ACS, designed to generate financial resources to find a cure. This year, the Northeast Jackson County Relay For Life will be held June 7th at the Heisler-Burns Park in Buckner. Typically, teams camp out and walk laps over a 12-hour time span. However, Danielle Propes, event chair, wants to build awareness in the community first, then expand to a full relay in the coming years. A block-party style event is scheduled from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Additionally, an opening and closing ceremony are planned along with dedicated laps to survivors and caregivers. Entertainment laps will be designated, including a poker-run series, a popular aspect in the past. Coupled with walking the track, there will be buy-in basketball tournaments, a silent auction and a DJ. Propes said the event will include the traditional luminaria ceremony and survivors' dinner. "It's amazing to get to know people who have fought and won their battles with cancer," she said. The luminaria ceremony allows participants to honor loved ones who are survivors, who have passed away or those still fighting their battle with cancer. Decorated white bags are presented with a lit candle, while names are displayed and projected on a large screen. Propes describes the ceremony as "peaceful," one that instills a sense of hope to those involved. There are several ways the community can get involved. Individuals can make a donation, visit the park during the event to participate in activities, or form and register a team. Currently, By Jessica Mauzey there are 10 teams signed up to participate with more teams expected. The registration fee is $10 per person and there is no limit on team size. Though not limited to businesses, there are also opportunities for sponsorship. Businesses, organizations and individuals who serve as event sponsors are recognized during the event. "This is a great way for small businesses and large corporations to become involved and support finding a cure," Propes said. The financial goal for this event is $20,000.
