10/ TheBucknerClarion.com June 12, 2014 Entertainment News A Classic Tale Retold at times, and my high expectations for the film were slightly let down. If Maleficent had been played by anyone other than Jolie, I probably would have been completely dissatisfied with this movie. The other actors were a snooze-fest on screen, and I wanted Aurora's annoying pixie guardians to be devoured by those forest tree-monster things that fought in Maleficent's army. I don't even think the forest tree-monsters ate people, but it would have been a nice change of pace. Obviously, I'm forgetting that this IS a Disney film that, sadly, was not directed by Tim Burton (or I may have gotten my carnivorous tree wish), so I'll ease up on the dark and twisted fantasies. The film was okay for a retelling of a classic fairytale. However, unless you're going to an IMAX, don't waste the extra couple of dollars seeing Maleficent in 3D. The visual effects are beautiful, but you'll enjoy them just as much in a standard theater. Burton had been the director. Come to find out, he was initially on board to direct the film before turning the project down. While the movie was entertaining, thanks to Jolie's engaging performance as the title character, it felt a bit lackluster By Tempest Wright Forget everything you know about Disney's 1959 classic Sleeping Beauty. Disney's re-imagining of the tale (released worldwide at the end of May), tells the entire story through the eyes of the villain Maleficent, after whom the film is titled. In this live-action film, starring Angelina Jolie, we learn of Maleficent's origins and how she truly came to curse Princess Aurora, better known as Sleeping Beauty.
