22 Jump Street Tops at the Box Office Despite the film's box office success, grossing $60 million over the weekend, 22 Jump Street was a hit and miss for me. As the sequel to 21 Jump Street (2012), the film follows two undercover cops, Jenko (Channing Tatum) and Schmidt (Jonah Hill), while they disguise themselves as college students in order to overturn a massive drug deal on campus. The film is filled to the brim with back-to-back jokes and banter and, while some of it was worthy of a good laugh, a lot of it made me cringe. One scene in particular served no purpose to the plot other than to make a disgusting slew of transphobic jokes. It's not so much that I cringed during this scene, but more like I stared wide-eyed, open mouthed and whispered, "Are you kidding me…" at least five times. Other than that obvious foul, the movie was entertaining. Ice Cube, who plays the police captain, nearly had me in tears on more than one occasion (I actually laughed so hard, I slapped my bad knee). I wish the film hadn't tried so hard to be socially aware just to drop the ball on about every social justice-esque issue it brought up. If you're going to be a comedy, just be a comedy and let the rest unfold organically. Otherwise, the entire thing is pretty awkward. Overall, it wasn't a bad movie. I had a fun time watching it, for the most part. Also, this film might make you actually afraid to send your kids to college, so have fun with that. SAVE THE DATE! The next food distribution from Harvesters is July 14th and 29th at Heart of God Fellowship, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. By Tempest Wright
