"Through our partnership with High Stakes Rodeo, this event is all we could have hoped for and more." Former Mayor John Keith launched an organization in 1991 to assist families in need during the holidays. The Mayor's Christmas Tree has collaborated with several area churches to help families in need for more than 20 years. In 2013, the organization served 44 families and 100 children in Buckner, Sibley and Levasy. On August 16, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., the third annual Joe and Mary Ann Stringer fish fry will be held at the Betty Lloyd Pavilion at Heisler-Burns Park. The fish fry, a benefit for The Mayor's Christmas Tree, is held in honor of local resident Joe Stringer and his late wife, Mary Ann. Eligible families include households that have at least one parent residing at home with the child or children. Additionally, the family must be a resident of Buckner, Levasy or Sibley, and not registered for any other holiday assistance program. Applications are taken for one week in November. Upon qualification, families will receive gifts for their children and food to make a traditional holiday dinner in mid-December. The organization is able to provide assistance through fundraising efforts. The fish fry includes both crappie and catfish, as well as fries, hush puppies, coleslaw and a drink. Adults can purchase tickets for $10, children 10 years and younger are $5 and children three years and below are free. Residents who are unable to attend the dinner may call Ed Burns at 816.801.9327. Burns will deliver plates to residents within the community. Visitors are welcome to bring their lawn chairs and listen to live music. "Parkside Pickers" will be performing bluegrass and old country music. A 50/50 drawing will also be held. The winner does not have to be present to win. In addition to the fish fry, the organization also hosts a ham and bean dinner in the spring and a silent auction in October.
