7/ TheBucknerClarion.com October 23, 2014 Community News Breakfast for Burns, Fort Osage Indians The Fort Osage football team is on a roll this season. As of October 9, they are undefeated with a flawless record of 7-0. But what lifts this feat to a higher level of accomplishment is something entirely different… On August 29, at Fort Osage High, the air was cool and the once- bright sky slowly darkened with clouds that mimicked thick, gray smoke. As the Indians suited up for war, every fan of Fort's football program knew that night would be the game changer. The Indians were taking on the Blue Springs Wildcats. Spectators watched with hungry eyes, clattering teeth and rising anticipation as Osage's boys took an early lead in the first quarter. Although Blue Springs was vastly predicted to crush Fort Osage like a toddler on an ant hill, they were mistaken when they lost 21-35. Since that night, nobody has had even the slightest doubt about the Indians. Long-time rival, Staley High School, in North Kansas City, was defeated. The back-and-forth game netted a final score of 24-20—in Fort's favor. It was quite impressive considering past power struggles between the schools. The Fort Osage Indians have been proficient in many aspects for a while, including their level of skill. On top of that, the crowd energy and local support have risen substantially. This season, the scoreboard has been one-sided, usually starting in the first quarter, in almost every game played by the ravenous high school. The feet stomping on metal bleachers is a beautiful mess, along with hyped screams of crazy fans wearing Indian headdresses, or those who have painted their skin black and red to show Indian pride. Fort Osage's moment is quickly approaching. With only a few games remaining in the regular season, Fort has multiple chances left to prove itself even more worthy of glory, and to show others that they are the best high school football team in the state.
