Celiac Disease: Gluten-Free is Best
A recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine
identified that the leading cause of getting celiac disease is due to
family history and the tendency to get the condition from your
genes. Celiac disease is a condition where the body attacks and
causes damage to the small intestine after gluten, a protein found
in wheat, enters the body.
The damage can lead to poor absorption of important nutrients.
This study also showed that children who consumed breast milk
as infants did not have less celiac disease than other children. The
research identified that the true cause of celiac disease is unknown,
but it has an effect related to the DNA and genes of a person.
Symptoms of gluten in celiac disease may lead to bloating, gas,
watery stools, itchy skin, tingling, or discolored teeth. The National
Foundation for Celiac Awareness and the American Society of
Health-System Pharmacists encourage people with celiac disease
to contact the drug manufacturer to see of gluten is a part of the
medication they are taking.
Certain starches such as corn, potato, and pregelatinized starch
may contain gluten. Consumers can go online at

maintained by Nationwide Children's Hospital (Columbus, Ohio).
