January 8, 2015 Vol. 1 Issue 18 Annual Charity Delivers Buckner Clarion PRSRT STD ECRWSS U.S. POSTAGE PAID EDDM RETAIL Local Postal Customer The (Photos provided by Randy Arnold Photography) Mayor's Christmas Tree Committee raises $10,000, serves 33 families – including 100 children, and delivers on goal to make sure that no child in Buckner, Levasy or Sibley goes without Christmas. A special thank you to all who helped make this a success. By Morgan Nail The Mayor's Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony has been around for more than 30 years. Preparation for this event starts shortly after Christmas. Fundraising events, including a ham, bean and soup dinner, fish fry, and the Mayor's Christmas Tree Dinner and Auction, are held to raise money for families in need during the holidays. This year's donations totaled $10,000 and served approximately 33 families, including 100 children. The Mayor's Christmas Tree Dinner and Auction, alone, raised nearly $7,000. Families who would like to participate are asked to complete an application to receive assistance. If accepted, those families are then given clothing and food, for both Christmas dinner and to help feed their children while they're out of school during Christmas break. Utility assistance is also offered through the Ministerial Alliance. The children are also asked to create a "wish list," and given $50 toward the items on the list. Through the Mayor's Toy Shop at City Hall, parents and grandparents are able to select gifts for their families the weekend before Christmas. All gifts are donated by community members, with a donation station set up at the Dollar General. The Mayor's Christmas Tree Committee thanks the following organizations for their support: KCP&L, Buckner Thriftway, Buckner Ministerial Alliance, all Buckner area churches, and all other businesses in the area for their outstanding support. Omega Chi Sorority wraps all presents for the children, before they are distributed the Saturday before Christmas, and also provides drinks for all of the events. As for next year's festivities, the main goal is to continue to "raise enough money to help all who apply next year," says City Clerk Larry Neidel. This goal is in concert with the committee's motto, "Making sure that no child in the Buckner, Levasy and Sibley area goes without Christmas." Make certain that no child in Buckner, Levasy and Sibley goes without Christmas in 2015. Join the Mayor's Christmas Tree Committee.
