Habitat Offers Help for Home Repairs USDA Rural Development offers a home repair program that assists very-low income homeowners with necessary home repairs. Applicants must meet income guidelines for the county in which they live, own and occupy the property, and have an acceptable credit history. This program may be used to remove health and safety hazards such as repairing roofs, heating and air conditioning, electrical, plumbing, water/sewer systems, windows, insulation, or to make a home handicap accessible. All loans have a fixed one percent interest rate for up to 20 years. This low interest rate and loan terms enables the customer to have a reasonable, affordable monthly payment. Grant funds may also be available to those applicants who are at least 62 years of age and cannot afford to repay a loan. Grant funding is limited and many times repairs will be funded with a combination of a loan and grant. Those interested in the program are encouraged to contact the USDA Rural Development office for specifics on all the eligibility criteria. A workshop regarding this program will be held at Buckner City Hall, 315 S. Hudson, on Saturday, June 13 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. A representative from Rural Development will be available to discuss the program and help Buckner residents with submitting an application. A representative from Truman Heritage Habitat for Humanity will also be available to discuss home repair projects with individual homeowners. Home repair projects can include improvements, repairs, removal of health and safety hazards, or modern upgrades for a home. Interested homeowners may call for an appointment, find out what documentation is needed, or complete a loan or grant application. For an appointment or more information about the repair program, call Truman Heritage Habitat for Humanity at (816) 461-6551. More details on this program and other Rural Development programs are available at USDA Rural Development's web site http://www.rd.usda.gov/mo, by contacting Debbie Berry at the Richmond Rural Development office, 500 Wollard Blvd., Richmond, Mo. 64085; by phone at (816) 776-5861, Ext. 4; or by email at debra.berry@mo.usda.gov.
