Easing the Sting of Canker Sores
Canker sores are wounds that appear inside mouth. They may appear
inside the cheeks or at the base of the gums. Possible causes of canker
sores include stress, hormonal imbalances, and sensitivity to certain
foods. Most canker sores are small, circular wounds with a red border
and a white or yellow center.
Pain, tingling, and a burning sensation may be experienced before or
after a sore appears. Some sores heal within two weeks, while other
sores may take up to six weeks to heal and can cause scarring.
Canker sores may be treated with some topical medications. Topical
medications used to soothe these sores include benzocaine (Orabase,
Anbesol) and hydrogen peroxide (Peroxyl, Orajel Antiseptic Mouth
Sore Rinse). Benzocaine is a local anesthetic that works to ease the
pain of canker sores. It is available in the form of pastes or gels. Side
effects of benzocaine include redness, and irritation.
